At the South West Refuge we do our best to keep children safe and happy. A child-care worker is available week days to provide high-quality care for the children while mothers attend appointments.

Children and young people react to family/domestic violence in various ways. You may notice some of the following in your children:

  • Bedwetting or disturbed sleep/nightmares
  • Anxiety
  • Aggressive behaviours
  • Mood swings
  • Low self-esteem
  • Sadness/Withdrawal
  • Developmental delays - physical, emotional, social
  • Headaches, stomach pains

South West Refuge (SWR) is setting a precedent in developing an assessment tool creating support opportunities for short-term child interventions in a refuge setting. Kidzown has been designed in response to the impact domestic and family violence (D/FV) upon children. The South West Refuge and Kidzown, sees children as clients in their own right. The project is working to create a tool that is actively non-threatening, inclusive, people/child-centred, meaningful & supportive. Through identifying and building upon strengths, the Kidzown purpose is to reconnect children and families back with the community and minimise the impact of the D/FV experience.

All people have the right to feel safe, access support and resources – KIDS TOO!

By working together, this can happen.

This research project has a three year grant from Telstra for innovative projects, and is coming into its final year. This is an exciting time where the Kidzown team is working hard to finish final drafts and gain as much feedback from children and adults. This is in an attempt for the tool to be used by all Australian refuges and the children who are accommodated there.

Any interest or questions please phone the Research Officer: 97912894 or email: kidzown@swrefuge.com.au
